work daily

It's Thursday,  that means it's wash sheets day (you can read about it HERE).  It's also day 8 of this challenge & I've already missed one.  But,  I'm not stressing.  I'm moving FORWARD (love that this is my word for the year,  see about it HERE)  I just got off the phone with my neighbor who asked me if I was working today.  And I laughingly said,  "I work everyday".  I knew she meant if I was going into the office.  I knew she meant the "work" that pays me to be there.  I knew... but I wanted her to acknowledge the stuff that I don't get paid for is work too.

I had this post all written in my head yesterday.  I was going to write about my job that I go to on Monday & Wednesdays.  I was going to write about how I got it.  That it was a God providing kind of thing.  And that's how that is a daily.  But,  since I got distracted & didn't write it DOWN.... I just have to go FORWARD.  I guess,  I have to mull it over,  ponder it some more & write about it later in the month.

In the meantime,  I've got to work.. there is laundry to do

daily distractions #1

It's morning & I just realized that I didn't post yesterday.  What's ironic is that I brought my computer to bed with me (not a usual habit,  one that I don't want to keep) with every intention of blogging.  But,  Superstar in college had texted that her roommate had booked her flight home for Christmas break & that I should "help" her do that too.  So,  I thought I'd just look at the prices & that ate up all the time that I set aside to blog.  Funny thing is that I had an idea in the morning,  but I had to get ready for work.  Funny thing,  I thought about it during the day,  formulating my outline & what I wanted to share.  Funny thing is when I started to yawn & saw the clock on my bedside table said 11:30pm,  I turned the computer off & went to sleep. It wasn't really that funny when my body clock went off & I got up to use the bathroom,  I almost stepped on my laptop.  And that's when I realized I had been distracted from my purpose last night.  I should have wrote that blog first then looked up airlines.  I get so distracted from my goals sometimes.  I have a feeling that not writing everyday is going to happen more than once this month.  And so,  this is daily distraction #1, moving forward

paying bills, sigh...

It's Tues.  And my day off.  I have scheduled to do the bills on Tues,  but it's something that I stress about daily.  Because,  doing the bills isn't just about opening the envelopes & writing the checks.  No,  that stopped when my husband died.  He was the provider of the family & the bill payer.  I am the comsumer that he use to try to teach to be more organized & budget conscience.  We went to the Dave Ramsey class & I know what I'm suppose to do,  but knowledge & doing are not the same things.  Especially,  when the bills keep coming & the disorganization becomes chaos.  Bill paying now is juggling.  Who do I pay first?  When does the benefits check come in?  What can wait?  Can I work extra to add to the incoming?  It's about choices & being organized.  I struggle in the clutter.  This is my daily.  This is my Tues

blog button

I have not really signed up for the challenge because I haven't made my blog button yet.  But I will not be daunted.  It will not defeat me.  I looked it up on google.  I have the image & graphics ready.  But when I go to create it.  It shows error.  I have a feeling that my computer is too old & outdated to support the service sites.  That's okay.  I was planning a trip to the library today.  I will get on the computer there.  Sigh,  I have to pay my overdue fine first.  Oh well,  had to take care of that sometime.  This is why, I have to make sure I do the "daily"s because I get so sidetrack by these "once in awhile"s.  This is why, I make "to do" list with things I've already done in the day,  just so I feel accomplished & can have something to cross off.  This is why, I need the God of the Universe to order my day, because when I try to be in control,  I just mess everything up & it's lacking peace.  This is why my favorite Bible verses are Lamentations 3:22-23

31 day challenge 2015 landing page

I wasn't sure I was going to take up the challenge this year because I lacked inspiration & motivation.  But last week,  I was working on my to do list for the day & laughing at myself for writing things that I do daily.  These things do not have to be written down.  They get done (most of the time) even when they are NOT written down.  I think I write them down just to have something to cross off.  And I started to think about all the things that I do daily & wondered if I had 31 of them,  so "wa-la" inspiration was born & the motivation was there... then... but now it's October 1 & I'm just making this landing page without any direction or plan.  Actually,  I don't even know if I'm making this right.  I tried making a "button",  but that got frustrating.  But I feel like I'm letting myself down by not doing this challenge.  And so here I am moving FORWARD... I"m planning on coming back to this post (if I've made it right) & adding the linkys (is this the right term).  So,  I'm coming back every time & adding my post for the day,  I still am not sure if I'm doing it right.  But I'm trying & enduring & perservering!

Independence day 2015, year 5

Early this morning,  I hung out the flag.  It's become a tradition since we moved here.  The other houses we lived in didn't have a flag holder but we had always intended to put one up.  So,  now this is part of our new normal.  A new family tradition to hang the flag out,  in front of our house,  on the 4th of July.

Our old normal,  consisted of going to Family Camp.  A week long church retreat that catered to the whole family & would be around the 4th of July.  It was a  long tradition of many families.  Friends,  who were like family to us,  who we only saw during that one week.  It was a highlight of the year for our family.

We would have an old fashion parade where kids would decorate their bikes & scooters with red, white & blue ribbon.  And of course there was a marching band,  that everyone who ever had anything to do with an instrument (even if it had been 10 years since they graduated from highschool band as it had been for my husband) was invited & cajoled into participating.  One year,  there was a boy who marched playing a violin.  I miss Family Camp & all that it meant.  I pray that the memories won't fade but will live in our hearts forever.

And now we have new traditions.  The kids are involved in historical reenactments & have learned how to fire old war artillery.  We,  also,  party with our new church family.  Playing typical picnic games like 3 legged races & watermelon rolls.  But perhaps the most fun,  is shooting our own fireworks.  This was prohibited in the state we use to live in.  Now,  in this new normal,  I volunteer at the firework stand & sell them to raise money for the band (oh, the joys of public school).

New normal isn't so bad when I think of these things.  Yes,  I miss the old normal,  but this is part of moving forward.  It would have happened even if Daddy hadn't died as we would have seen the kids parting to make their own traditions & gain their independence.

As I reflect on my own new normal & this independence that I've been thrust into.  I can say that I'm pretty proud of myself.  I've had to make so many major decisions as part of being "head of the household".  I've done so many things that I use to let my husband (& before him,  my own Dad) do because those where things that husbands & Dads do.  For instance,  last year,  one of the side trees needed to be trimmed because it was blocking the view of the street when backing out of the garage.  This year with all the rain,  I'm thinking that if I don't get the big limbs cut that they will break on to the roof with the heaviness of the leaves.  This one,  I can't do on my own,  but will have to hire someone.  That in itself is something hard to do,  because I don't know how to judge who would do a good job & not charge me fairly.  I'm such an easy "mark" for a conman.  And in this,  I hate that the buck stops with me.

So,  on this Independence day,  I celebrate that I'm doing okay in my new normal.  I just wish I didn't still miss my honey so very fiercely.

five minute friday : BREAK

So the prompt word is BREAK.  What do I do with this word?  I've got 5 minutes to try to do it.  It's an overwhelming word.  So much content,  lots of directions I could go with it.  I feel a bit overwhelmed.  I wish I would have looked it up this morning & had a walk with the dogs to mull it over.  But,  I'm in bed with 2 hours before this Friday is over & I want to blog.  But BREAK?  really?

My first thought when I saw it,  "yeah,  right... I took a break from blogging"  but then I got even more bleak & thought,  " I took a break from life".  Nope,  that's not the direction,  I want my thoughts or this blog to go.

Then,  I thought about my coworker, (I need to go over my blogs & see if I gave her a nickname).  She has 2 breaks in her tibia.  She fell & broke both elbows.  Yup,  ouch... nope,  that's not the kind of break either that I want to blog about.

Ha... timer up,  I guess,  I don't really have to write about it now.  I've accomplished my goal.  I've blogged.  Yup,  no real substance & that disappoints me a bit,  but I'm moving on. I'm going forward.  I will revisit this word after I've ponder.....

Time to change the sheets

I'm waiting for my bed sheets to come out of the dryer.  Usually,  I hang the sheets because I love the smell of sunshine that lingers after you take them down. The kids laugh with me as I inhale deeply & say "smell that sunshine".   I know it's not the smell of sunshine but of dried cotton (or percale,  I'm not sure what my sheets are made of).  But to me,  it's the smell of sunshine,  outdoor freshness & good memories of my childhood when I would hang sheets with my Aunty Ben.

Alas it's winter now & that means flannel sheets.  It means that there is still ice outside & the rain from last night has made lots of mud underneath my clothesline. It means putting the bedsheets in the dryer with a smelly thing that advertises to be outdoor fresh.

But my bedsheets or smell of sunshine isn't really what I wanted to write about... as I was walking the dogs this morning,  (see I told you I do my blog thinking while I walk them),  I was thinking about what i needed to get done today.  And it's not Thurs so I can't do the sheets.  Baby Girl had a memory at the dinner table the other day of taking her bedsheets & stuffing it into the pillowcase & tossing the bag over her shoulder & singing "hi ho, hi ho,  it's off to work we go" & how it they would do it every Thurs.  It was the routine.  And now the topic of this blog came into my thoughts.

In moving forward,  sometimes you have to get out of your routine.  When you are stuck & tangled,  you have to change & do something different so that you can move forward.  But sometimes,  you just have to get back into the routine.  I'm probably going to have to come back to these thoughts.  There is alot to ponder.

onward FORWARD

Tonight,  on my last walk of the day with the dogs,  I thought about blogging.  I do this often on my walks,  but I come home & get distracted & blogging doesn't happen.  Almost didn't happen because yup,  came home & got distracted.  But I want to move forward & onward & blog.  Even if it's about being distracted.  I had thought that I would blogg about the lovely smell of rain & fresh dirt.... it signifies spring.  I had thought about writing about walking the dogs.  I had thought I would even write about blogging even though it's not the "30 day challenge".  But no,  I'm just writing so that I will get a post in before it gets to be months that I haven't blogged.  I still can't believe that I didn't write anything in February.  Yup,  it's definitely time to move FORWARD...

to post

I have to confess that I'm writing from the top of my head again.  I had thought that the habit would have stuck from the 31 day challenge to be more consistent in blogging.  The habit of writing has stuck,  so with that I am happy.  But I have had many blog post in mind,  but the old "sins" of perfectism,  lazyness & comparison have crept up & have kept me away.  I think I must need the accountablity of the challenge.  I'm surprise that I was just a bit dissapointed that I went from close to 50 views to 2.  After all,  I stopped writing for a reader,  so I shouldn't be dissappointed.  I think I need to go back to having goals & objectives.  So,  I'll write them out here: (remember just writing from the top of my head without a plan).  I want to blog at least once a week.  I'd love for them to be well thought out,  with subjects that I want to share with my kids,  but if that doesn't happen before the week is over,  then,  I'll join in the five minute prompt or story saturday or silent sunday.  I need to draft the subjects or thoughts that I wanted to write about.  For instance,  I had a good thought about writing about the correlation between death & beauty in the fall leaves.  These thoughts came to me during my walks with the dogs around the neighborhood.  Yup,  this is a start... amen....

five minute friday: leave

Yipee the 31 day challenge is over & I can congratulate myself & say that I kept to my goal & posted every single day.  I'm starting to look forward to it next year & thinking what will I pick.  I'm leaning towards doing a 5 min free write that is part of five minute friday... hope I remember this.

oops,  the timer hasn't gone off yet,  so I suppose,  I just keep writing from the top of my head.  But all I keep thinking about is what I have to do next.  I haven't picked up any Halloween candy yet. I wonder how many will come by.  I had way more candy last year than I needed.

And I should clean the front room a bit.  We walk in through the back door,  hence the front room has become a bit (ok,  more than a bit) of a catch all place & the trick or treaters will come knock on the front door.  Can't let them see past the open door to my piles of newspapers that I haven't taken to the recycle in months.... & oops,  I forgot to use the word for today's#FMF party.... leave... I'm leaving the challenge today.... does that work... hee, hee... I'm feeling giddy... hee, hee

Yipee,  the beep just came on & I'm done.  Not just with this post but with the challenge.  It's been fun.  I've connected with a community that I didn't know existed.  I'm going to have fun catching up & reading all those blogs that I didn't get to.  And for the ones that I connected with,  oh my,  how you have encouraged,  inspired & challenged me.  But most of all,  I've developed a consistency.   I can move on & keep pressing.  I think this deserves a high five!

As Paul Harvey would say... "now, for the rest of the story.."

Doing the 5 minute friday was fun.  Actually,  doing this whole 31 day challenge has been fun.  I think it's because I chose to not make it all that deep & thought provoking.  I chose to keep it light & not so vulnerable.

I surprised myself with what I wrote yesterday.  Most of my posts for the challenge have been from the top of my head not so much from the recesses of my heart.  But yesterday,  I delved into a memory.  And it has me reflecting.

I didn't get a chance to finish my story because the timer went off.  The comments reflected that they didn't know the rest of the story.... as Paul Harvey would say... & to answer the question from one of the comments : Yes,  my whole life has been a dare.  And it has been worth it.

I started this blog to help me process my "new normal" of journeying without the big dare of my life,  my husband.  He died on March 23,  2010;  leaving me with 4 wonderful blessings who needed their Daddy & a mountain of decisions.  I dared to move them to an area which meant they were closer to their Dad's roots & could know him more from relatives & how he was brought up.  But also meant that I was moving away from my own solid support of family, church & school. And I continue to dare to press on.

As we wind down to the end of this challenge,  I've been wondering what I will incorporate into my blog.  I want to keep the consistency.  I want to continue learning about blogging.  But I want to go back to writing from my heart & not just my head.  I need to in order to become unstuck & untangled.  I want to keep pressing on.

Choice #2

I don't know what to write about tonight.  I know that I want to post.  I know that my category is blogging & social media.  I know I have lots of choices on what to focus on.  But none of it sounds appealing to me.  I don't really feel like writing right now.  But the motivation of the challenge keeps me moving (my word of 2014... hmm,  I should revisit this during my 31 days) & pressing on.  Yay,  I will have made my 13 consecutive day post.  This is my choice for today.

Why Blog?

I first started to blog when my husband was going through his cancer treatment & it was cathartic.  And after he died,  I blogged for a while because there were some who were interested in my journey,  but I noticed the following dwindled.  These were 2 very personal blogs with very personal family & friends who followed.  Then I took a hiatus from writing anything.  I didn't even write in a journal.  I don't think I felt like sharing my heart.  I was too raw & vulnerable. I felt the need to retreat.
I started this blog because I felt the need to write about my journey of pressing on.  I didn't have an audience in mind.  I really just wanted to encourage myself.  I felt that by writing, venting & expressing both my angst & joys,  I could untangle my feelings of grief,  single parenthood & loneliness.  I needed to become unstuck & move on to what God's purpose in my life (whatever that is... because I still haven't figured it out).   Hence,  the title of this blog is Unstuck, Untangling, Pressing on.  I guess I'm the intended reader & if anyone else reads my writing than that's just an added bonus.

Sometimes,  I use this blog more to vent & so I probably sound "whiny".  I don't feel the need to apologize for that because venting is part of the purpose.  Venting helps me become unstuck.  I vent & then I press on.

Sometimes,  I ramble and again,  I don't think I should apologize for that because I'm the intended reader.  And rambling helps me untangle my thoughts.  It helps me get my thoughts out of my head so that I can make some sense of it & press on.

Sometimes,  I have no focus..... & that's why I need to write... to blog... to press on

Just like riding a bicycle...

She told me that it would be "just like riding a bicycle".  She, being a friend who told me about a job as an intake nurse at a Pediatric private practice.  I told her that I didn't think I knew how to be a nurse anymore. It's been almost 20 years since I've worked in a hospital.   She gave me the "pshaw" & said that it would come back to me quickly.  And it has!  I'm so happy to say that after 3 days of orientation,  I'm back to being a pediatric nurse (before I was married,  I worked at a Children's Hospital in a BIG city).

Before my "new normal",  I use to refer to the "R" in my RN as "retired".  I liked being a stay at home mom.  I liked that my identity was wrapped up in that.  I liked that my "job" as 'Mommy"  still incorporated what I learned to get my bachelor's degree,  but was so much more fulfilling.  I didn't think that I'd ever go back.  But I kept my license up for the "just in case".  I would never want to take the Boards again.

The "just in case" did happen,  but it didn't mean I had to go back to work.  Daddy set us up well & it has allowed me to still be Mama Bird to my 4 ducklings. It's been different as they've started learning away from home.  And I've had to learn to be a booster parent.  It's been different as I was no longer the sole schedule maker,  but had to abide by school adminstrators & sports leagues.   I've had to learn how to fly as head of the household (really an income tax term) & lead my little flock into new situations.  It's been scary,  but God has been faithful.

But I've been praying about the time that my little birdies will fly away from me.  I've been praying about the time when I will have to spread my wings & go solo.  I want them to grow & have families of their own.  I don't want them to "worry" about me being alone.  And so I've been praying.  Never thinking that the answer would come before I was ready or even before any of my ducklings were really gone from our nest.  Actually,  I didn't want the answer to come until they were out from my wing.  And so,  when the opportunity for this job came,  I hesistated,  but then had to seize it.

Have you ever heard the story of the man who fell from his boat & cried out to the Lord to save him.  Many tried to rescue him,  but he refused their efforts saying that he was waiting for the Lord.  So,  when he finally drowns,  he asks St Peter at the pearly gates why the Lord didn't come save him,  & finds out that God sent the rescue team.  The man had thought God would answer different.  And I didn't want to be like that man.
I want to make sure that I will take my Master's hand when He is reaching out to me.

my ONE word resolution: MOVE

During the wait for the Rose Parade,  there was a news segment that talked about new year's resolutions & how more than 85% (or maybe it was higher) do not follow with their list.  It was then follow up with the book called My one word.  His theory is that you will keep to one word  because of the simplicity of it. http://myoneword.org/book/  One word is easy to remember.  One word can mean more than one thing.  And this is where my word comes in

my word is MOVE.... after all this blog name is about becoming unstuck... so hence,  I need to move.    Moving in all 4 aspects of my life
PHYSICALLY:  I need to exercise more,  have more movement in my daily life.... not quite sure how I'm going to do this,  but if I have MOVE in the forefront of my mind,  then I shall move.
INTELLECTUALLY:  I have had to shift my mindset from homeschool mama to... not sure as my kids have moved to traditional brick & mortar school.  I've had to attend booster meetings & learn about common core.  I've had to learn how to be more organized as the kids schedule hasn't been in my control but at the mercy of the school administration.  And now as I think about moving back into the workforce.... oh my,  will I have to go back to school?  Is my intellect ready to move to that kind of study?  But I am working on moving intellectually.
http://www.griefshare.org/
o

EMOTIONALLY:  I'm moving towards healing with the help of http://www.griefshare.org/  I don't really have the luxury of wallowing in my grief.... sigh...
But I am moving.  I wish it were faster,  but I'm am starting to become unstuck.
And lastly,  SPIRITUALLY:  I'm moving by putting on sensible shoes... ha,ha... no really,  I started reading this book on spiritual disciplines & want to feel the Holy Spirit move (another sigh).  This perhaps is the most scary to move because it takes me out of my comfort zone.  It is easy to be content in my relationship with the Lord.  But I want true growth.  I want to MOVE closer to God"s heart.  I want the joy of my salvation.

I AM MOVING.........  MY ONE WORD:  MOVE

A Writer doesn't have to get it right the first time

This is maybe my 3rd or 4th attempt at blog writing.  The first one was during my husband's illness & it was to just get feelings out.  I probably could have gone back to that,  because now I need to get other feelings out,  but that's the whole point of my blog title... I want to get unstuck.  I really need to get untangled & like it says in Phillippians 3:: 12-14,  I'm pressing on.  Actually,  maybe I should just put the verses here,  using the ESV

2 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained. 17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

oops,  I went further on the verse... I really like this copy & paste stuff... but I digress.  I write again.  I've been inspired by other blog writers like http://mostlytoday.blogspot.com/ & http://hisglory-glorydawn.blogspot.com/who are using this forum to give voice to their journey.  And now I want to share my journey.

I've been going to a grief share group that just ended the first 13 week session. One of the lessons I came away with is that I need to not be stuck in widowhood.  I don't want to be like the little old lady that goes on about her dead husband,   sympathizing with her,  thinking it's a recent loss only to find out he passed away 20 years ago.  That's stuck,  I don't want that to me.  But I think I've been tangled up in the mess of getting settled into this new normal that I haven't really pressed on.

And so,  like any issue,  it's in acknowledging that there is an "issue" that gives you the freedom work on it,  learn from it,  grow...  press on,

I'm not sure who is going to read this blog aside from family & friends.  I've decided to be a little more discreet (my kids say to me all the time to not post their sayings or doings or images on facebook) since this is a public medium.  But I'm hoping that this journey of mine brings healing & encouragement.... press on

Keep Calm and Carry On was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 several months before the beginning of the Second World War, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the aftermath of widely predicted mass air attacks on major cities.

I couldn't find an image that said keep calm and press on but I like the story of this anyways & decided to add it to my journey.
